    The Unsung Heroes

November 2, 2012: Presently we observe an environment of mayhem across our nation. Eyewitnesses describe the scene of fire outrages as if the ‘hell fire was let loose’ with scorching flames embracing the building and those within it into a deep sleep of painful death.

Have we ever wondered; who are our saviors in this scenario of chaos? They are firefighters and I call them our ‘unsung heroes’. Firefighters are the personnel who receive specialized training to counter extremely dangerous circumstances and help those who are in grave peril. It’s sad that they don’t receive the respect and appreciation they deserve from the masses or other institutions in general; when in reality they are the only ones who risk their lives to save ours.

Globally, firefighters are not restricted to dealing with fire related disasters instead firefighting accounts for only 7-8% of their work; they majorly engage in rescue operations that make up 92% of their work. Rescue operations refer to emergency services that are needed time and again for which the fire department is contacted. Worldwide people term the fire department as a human friendly department as citizens are more comfortable in approaching them as compared to other agencies like the police.

I feel our government should take appropriate measures to ensure that our fire departments are developed in alignment with international norms. Around the globe fire department is one of the most important rescue organizations for any nation and firefighters are considered as inspirational role models for the young generation.

We as masses should understand and respect the efforts of those to work selflessly to protect us without giving second thoughts about their own safety.
