Your vision for America |
A Real Democracy
Money has to come out of politics. Citizens United must be overturned. It should shame us as a democratic nation that our elections are largely determined by which candidate can throw the most money at their campaign. Why not have a system in which each candidate receives the same amount of funds and we elect on the merits of their policies and on who they are as people? Attack ads costing millions make a mockery of our character as Americans and our fiscal responsibilities. We cry about our deficit, and spend needless millions on our elections.
Term limits should be set for members of Congress and the Senate. Any law that applies to the rest of America should also apply to our leaders. Lawmakers should not be above the law. The power and money grab that has become our system of government is a disease that will kill America. A large number of Americans have become aware that those in power actually have very little concern for us or the realities of our lives. But we feel like there is nothing we can do about it. This is democracy? Wall St. must be controlled. Left to itself, it will bankrupt the globe while a few very rich individuals find themselves a comfortable island to retire on.
My vision of America includes a government that takes it's stewardship of our country and the world seriously. That does not pander to those who selfishly want to drive their SUV's and their trucks no matter the cost to the planet. No wonder Americans are viewed by many in the world to be spoiled and self centered. We are a great country, but we also need to be a smart and responsible country if we want to lead by example. Gov. Romney would rape our land and oceans to squeeze every last drop of fossil fuel from them to make us "energy independent" and to appease those who want cheap fuel at any cost to our future. Our air, our water, our health would be the price. Eventually, the sustainability of our planet. How is this worth it? How short sighted can we remain? Once again, short term profit wins out over long term responsibility.
We have a country with a dire need for an overhaul. Our power grids, our water mains, our bridges, our trains, all need modernizing and rebuilding. Our school system needs to be brought up to speed if we're going to compete globally. We have a lot of work to do here at home. We should stop messing about so much in other people's homes and look to our own.
America is the greatest nation on earth. We should be proud. Our politicians need to remember who they work for, and if they don't produce results, we should be able to fire them and elect someone who will. It's time to stop coddling and enriching our leaders and actually expect them to lead.
