    NYC - A DARK WALK IN THE PARK

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Photographer and filmmaker JodiKaplan loves Central Park and Riverside Park in New York City, but on a walk on Thursday night through their green paths, she said the atmosphere was markedly different following Superstorm Sandy's visit. "It is a very heavy feeling. We are essentially cut off from half of our city," she said. "The parks reflect the mood of the neighborhood and they are quiet and heavy, too, which is why I call this piece a 'dark walk' - the shots being taken during twilight in this twilight kind of zone."

    A walk in the park is the quintessential Upper West Side getaway. An oasis from the storm of daily stress. A momentary respite where New Yorkers from all walks of life meet to retreat. Yet since Sandy hit, there is a striking apocalyptic quality in these havens. An emptiness. The few seekers that venture out seem to ignore their new setting. And each other. In Riverside Park a woman jogs past sawed trees. A child slides towards his mother behind a destroyed area. A lone little girl in a red coat scootering below. There is a feeling of separateness. Sparse human interaction. On the way to Riverside, a foreboding shattering of a car window. Down the road behind the Museum of Natural History on 79th Street and Columbus Avenue, the fallen destruction literally blocks the entryway to this park area where laughter and group play are suspended. Indefinitely. – Jodi Kaplan
