While delivering relief supplies to hard hit areas like Belle Harbor and Far Rockaway, we were struck by the sheer scope of the damage all along the peninsula. We had previously made these kinds of runs to the south shore of Long Island, Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and Midland Beach. The Rockaways seemed to be, at least in terms of physical damage to whole neighborhoods, the hardest hit. Belle Harbor seemed to be receiving an ample supply of donated goods, and volunteers and members of the National Guard seemed to be plentiful. Areas further east, such as Arverne and Far Rockaway seemed much worse off. A visible police presence was seen along many streets, but there seemed to be no action in terms of outreach by FEMA, the Red Cross, or other organizations in the more impoverished neighborhoods in the Rockaways.
