Veterans in focus: My Dad
- Jamescia, CNN iReport producer
At 31 years old, I'm just now learning of the horrible things my dad saw while at war, not to mention the miserable "welcome" they received upon returning home.
In 2009 my dad was able to take part in an official "Welcome Home" ceremony held on base at Fort Campbell, KY along with about 1500 other Vietnam Veterans. Over the years, I've come to appreciate not only my father's service for his country, but also all he's taught me in life, especially about appreciating our freedoms protected by our military.
Today, with a 4 year old daughter of my own (shown in the picture with her Papa), I'm proud to see her learning about appreciation of our Veterans as she attends Veterans Day ceremonies with my dad, just as I did at her age. My dad has taught me much over the years; never take life too seriously, laugh often, speak your mind unapologetically, and vote. I'm no less proud that my daughter is learning these same lessons from the same man who taught them to me.
Thank you, dad, for your love of God, family and country. May your contribution, and that of all Veterans, never be forgotten.
