To my Love on Veterans Day

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     ajhmusic1 is honoring Lance Corporal Mark A. Garland. He has served in the United States Marine Corps since August 2009. 'He taught me to be appreciative of not only things that you own, but more importantly the time you have with people you love,' she says.
    - Jamescia, CNN iReport producer

Over 6 years ago, I met a boy in high school. We were in the same grade and instantly there was a connection. After getting to know each other, we began dating. I will never forget, and take pride in, the day we were talking about our future dreams. With certainty, he replied that he was going to be a Marine. I responded that I dreamed of being a teacher. The years went by and our lives continued on, and I can proudly say that today Mark is in North Carolina at camp Lejeune Marine base. In the past 2 years, he and the rest of the 1/8 marines have been on two consecutive combat deployments to Afghanistan. As for me, I have 2 semesters left until I finish my education at Maryville College in east Tennessee and begin my teaching career. In case you were wondering, we are still in a great relationship.
Mark and I have worked hard to support each other in reaching our goals. I know that the stories of the deployments told by Mark and his friends have helped me keep my complaints in perspective! Simple daily tasks like being able to take a real shower and using the computer or phone every day is a luxury compared to what they go through for weeks at a time when they deploy. Not to mention, they are always dedicated to doing hard and sometimes unimaginably tragic work on a daily basis. After you know what all they have experienced it is difficult to find anything wrong with a rough day filled with homework or a rude customer at work. Therefore, for this Veterans Day, I want to express my sincere support and thanks to my love, Lance Corporal Garland, and the rest of the United States military for all that they willingly sacrifice. The service men and women I know personally are all very hard workers and do so selflessly, and their sacrifices are greatly appreciated. I am a girlfriend, daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin, and friend to many active and retired military service men and women, and I know that all of these people deserve to be appreciated on this day and every day.
