    PTK Inducts 160 Red Rocks Students as new Members.

    Phi Theta Kappa Ranks RRCC Chapter in the top 100 PTK Colleges Worldwide.

    Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is the International Honor Society of two year colleges and membership is open only to students who meet the academic eligibility requirements. The PTK chapter at Red Rocks Community College, Alpha Kappa Sigma, is ranked a Five-Star chapter both regionally and internationally; the chapter is also recognized as one of the top 100 chapters of the nearly 1,300 PTK chapters worldwide.

    RRCC students continued their tradition of excellence and Alpha Kappa Sigma welcomed 160 new members at a October 17, 2012 ceremony on the Lakewood campus. Family and friends watched the official ceremony as students were inducted into PTK, the new members recited a pledge of continuing excellence, and several 4.0 GPA inductees were recognized for their outstanding academic performance.

    PTK's academic focus for the next two years is “The Culture of Competition" and Soomin Chun-Hess, RRCC instructor, was asked to address the room full of outstanding students. The 2012 RRCC “Full-Time Instructor of the Year” spoke of the difference between cooperative competition and cutthroat competition;

    “America has become successful because we have mastered the art of competition. Healthy competition is at the core of Americanism. It drives people to create, produce, and innovate. I believe human beings are inherently good and cooperative. I see evidence of cooperative competition at Red Rocks every day; when each student competes with themselves, to do his or her very best, while helping others in the process. I encourage you to compete in life to elevate yourself and others and to always have pride in what you do.”

    President of RRCC, Michelle Haney, also spoke at the evening ceremony and directly addressed the friends and family of new PTK members, “For all the times you help our students around the house so they can do homework, give them rides when the weather is bad, pay tuition and the many other things you do to help... Thank you. Red Rocks is here to provide academic support to our students but none of this would be possible without many of you in the audience tonight. We gladly take second seat to you and greatly respect your sacrifice for these outstanding students.”

    The president’s words illustrate the commitment to student success found at Red Rocks. That commitment has made a substantial difference and RRCC students are some of the best and brightest students in the world. The excellence of RRCC students, faculty, and staff is evidenced by the many recognitions awarded to the Alpha Sigma chapter of PTK;
