A Classic on Old Route 66
I’ve eaten 1/10th of a mile of their Foot Long, Chile Cheese dogs (FLCCD) con onions since the ‘60s in their “new” location 2 blocks away, but still on 66. Wait! Wait! Wait! Not your brown Coney Island or Tex-Mex Chile, this is a concoction using New Mexican Red Chile!!! (Lest Y’all be unaware, Hatch, NM is the chile capital of the US growing both green and red chile, each with their unique heat and tastes.)
Unlike your usually grilled or boiled dog, the 'sous chef' here takes the extra time to vertically slice open these everyday dogs to grill them on that same grille of old to bring out the true essence of what a hot dog is made…whatever that be! I can’t help but think that Frasier and Niles (the Crane boys) would give up one of their annually seasoned La Bouche crepe pans to be able to cook on this seasoned grille. In addition, the buns are grilled so the toastiness can add strength to the bun’s innards, minimizing its falling apart when smothered in Red Chile within.
Lest I were to be asked, “No, never once have I had bowel distress that I've periodically had via some "gourmet" meals experiences.”
Alas, no alcoholic beverages, but as I think of having my Fav of a Margarita or beer that I’d otherwise have with my New Mexican cuisine, I don’t think it would be a complimentary choice with this particular recipe of red chile! Just like choosing the proper wine elsewhere, my choice with a FLCCD has always been…and the only time I drink it….an orange soda. A ‘cola’ with this particular version of red chile….Oh Tres Gauche as it flummoxes the whole unique, taste sensation.
Yes, Y’all can get other offerings of customarily accessorized dogs; hamburgers; Frito-pies, etc.
My only sadness with DH is they recently tore off the wood paneling along with the tin-stamped pics/mirrors from a redo in the '70s and have used a multicolored design to paint the cinderblock wall. Yo....if it ain't broke, don't "fix" it!!! At least the spinning, vinyl topped stools at the counter remain along with the booths. Despite car hops, I recommend first timers eat inside, particularly for easy access to napkins. Also, either eat before or after the noon hour when the suits and the pearls/heels/nylon crowd comes in from the downtown offices.
Oh, albeit I do not watch this series filmed in ABQ, Y’all might have seen The DH as a backdrop for ‘Breaking Bad’. Just to the west, on your way to Old Town Plaza, turn south on Laguna and you’ll be in the opening scene of that film classic (LOL)…Wild Hogs when Travolta, Allen, Lawrence, and Macy hook up on their Hogs for adventures with Liotta, Tomei, and Easy-Rider himself!!!
