    Phnom Rung Temple, Thailand

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     JohnVogel photographed these images of the Phnom Rung Temple in Buriram, Thailand, on November 11. He visited the temple 15 years ago while traveling for work and decided to revisit the site. He says the temple is a 'true gem' and a well restored historical site in the city. His fifth photo was selected as CNN's Travel Photo of the Day for January 25, 2013.

Crowning the summit of an extinct volcano 70 stories above the rice paddies below, the Phnom Rung temple was built between the 10th & 13th centuries by the Angkor civilization of what's now Cambodia. The Phnom Rung temple complex is the largest and best restored Khmer monument in Thailand and is built in the classic Angkor style. Many of the carved figures are identical to those found at Angkor Wat.

The Phnom Rung Temple (also known as Prasat Phnom Rung) is located in the eastern Thailand province of Buriram.
