Becoming a Writer
I had never considered myself a writer before. I knew I loved to write, but all my previous teachers hadn’t really paid any attention to my work, only wanting to read concise literary summaries, not the creative prose that I spit out. Tonya was the first one to tell me that I had talent. Finally, I was good at something and someone else recognized it! She went on to encourage me to apply for a position at the University Writing Center where she was a director, and I got the job. She gave me the confidence boost I needed to declare my major in English and to declare myself a writer. She continued to be my mentor of sorts throughout my time at Appalachian State, and I appreciate everything she did for me during my college days. I went from a shy, scared freshman to a confident graduate with a proud degree in English. It is because of her belief in me that I continued on my journey with writing and ended up where I am today!
