    Becoming a Writer

I was terrified stepping into my first college class; all these kids seemed older, smarter, better than me somehow. I sat down with shaking hands, pulled out my notebook and waited for class to start. But the woman who walked in front of the class could have easily been one of us; tattoos, lip piercing, hair dyed red, little and cute. And that’s the first day I met Tonya.

I had never considered myself a writer before. I knew I loved to write, but all my previous teachers hadn’t really paid any attention to my work, only wanting to read concise literary summaries, not the creative prose that I spit out. Tonya was the first one to tell me that I had talent. Finally, I was good at something and someone else recognized it! She went on to encourage me to apply for a position at the University Writing Center where she was a director, and I got the job. She gave me the confidence boost I needed to declare my major in English and to declare myself a writer. She continued to be my mentor of sorts throughout my time at Appalachian State, and I appreciate everything she did for me during my college days. I went from a shy, scared freshman to a confident graduate with a proud degree in English. It is because of her belief in me that I continued on my journey with writing and ended up where I am today!
