Republican Restoration: Rule# 2
Part 2 in a series designed to resurrect GOP political prospects.
While the talk might have been of the 47%, the 51% made a big difference at the ballot box this election season. I refer, of course, to the women of the electorate who went for Obama 55% to Romney’s 44%- a sizeable divide in polling terms.
You had a Janus at the top of the ticket in Romney, swearing he was ‘Pro-Life’, when the historical record had him swearing resolutely he was the opposite. He had a running mate in Paul Ryan, who, along with Representative (and now-failed Senate candidate)Todd ‘legitimate rape’ Akin, introduced legislation attempting to qualify rape as ‘forcible’ or otherwise. And there was, of course, Richard Mourdock claiming pregnancy from rape must, somehow, be God’s intention.
No surprise to anyone, or anyone thinking clearly, that this attitude from aging males (Ryan being the only youngster, relatively speaking) might be off-putting to the female of the species when they hit the voting booth. Romney, Akin and Mourdock are history. Only Ryan remains, retaining his house seat- his losing gamble to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency meaning he’ll likely never occupy that seat.
So the lesson for the GOP male would have to be as Aretha commanded. Give women respect. Don’t talk down to them, or pretend to know their mind, or what God supposedly has in store for them and their bodies. Learn about how a woman’s uterus actually functions and then stay the hell out of it. Treat women as equals.
In fact, treat them as more than equals. As 51% attests, women are the majority, and in this coming Congress, more women will serve than EVER before in the country’s history.
Soon may come a day when men will wonder if they’ll be accorded the same respect they too often deny women now.
