The 17th century Ukrainian Catholic Church of St. Andrew, formerly the Bernardine Church and Monastery, glitters in the center of this university city in western Ukraine. Lviv offers a visually compelling blend of architectural styles ranging from the Renaissance to Art Deco and its historic center has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. On a recent visit I discovered not only architectural delights but also a thriving coffee house culture--a legacy from its imperial Austrian period--as well as a lively nightlife drawing a growing stream of appreciative visitors to this under the radar metropolis.
