'Superstorm' Sandy: Your stories |
Breezy Point Fire
I recently visited Roxbury and Breezy Point in Queens, NY. My wife grew up in the small town of Roxbury, and we both happen to have several mutual friends on the peninsula. We arrived to help out some friends in the morning, and after sweating out our Long Island Bagel sandwiches, we decided to walk through the burn zone that left over 100 houses burned to the ground. It was truly devastating. We then helped out my wife's childhood friend and neighbor in Roxbury. We did what we could and then we walked the beach westward into the sun, staring at the wreckage that loomed into Jamaica Bay. Houses that fell into each other, decks that were ripped off like the top of a cardboard box, garbage piled high along the walkway, all lingered throughout the 'Sandy' beach. This area of NYC is like no other. I know this community will rebuild and thrive again as soon as possible. The sandy sidewalks will be filled with cruiser bikes, coolers, and true New Yorkers once again.
