    Walmart Black Friday Recon

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     iReporter MelissaF snapped photos of shrink-wrapped toys, bedding, and clothing at a Wal-Mart in Brea, California. Across the country as people sit down to Thanksgiving dinners, major retailers are gearing up for Black Friday shoppers. Some stores are even opening their doors on Thanksgiving Day.

It was fun doing a little recon at Walmart before the Black Friday sales. I like seeing all the goodies that people will run themselves over every year, but come to find out things have changed in more ways than one at Walmart and for the better. I was pleasantly surprised and thought why isn't Walmart speaking about these great things, especially dealing with a looming strike on Friday?

The first thing I noticed is that there seems to be a lot more merchandise set out this year. I saw plenty of clear shrink wrapped pallets around the store full of toys, bedding, clothing, and small appliances. It wasn’t until I got to the back did I see the black shrink wrapped pallets and they were in the Electronics Department, the top secret stuff. Although if you look closely at the top of the pallets you can tell they are the televisions.

I spoke with an employee who explained to me that Walmart is having three events with these sales. They begin at 8 pm on Thursday night, then 10 pm, and the final event at 5 am Friday morning. The employee also told me that this year they are handing out numbers for the televisions. I thought this was great and should minimize any fights or accidents during the sales. With queue gates and numbers should make it less stressful on not only the shoppers, but the employees as well.

I found the flyer with all the Walmart sales online and in my humble opinion the best deals are at the first event starting at 8 pm on Thursday. You can see all the details at Walmart.com. There is also something new on the front of the advertising that claims a one hour guarantee on three electronic items, an iPad, television, and a Blu-ray player. If they run out they will give you a rain check that guarantees the item before Christmas. I think this will really help with the crowds.

I can’t wait to hear if all these changes work and see if other companies take note. Even though I will be not participating I do have a few family members that will be leaving me the kitchen to clean up to get in line.

Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours.
