CNN PRODUCER NOTE     crumpf77 says he arranged to go on a ride-along with local police, and they took some time on November 21 to show him the damage around Ortley Beach and Seaside Heights in New Jersey. They saw a devastated boardwalk, damaged or destroyed houses and an ominous-looking sign scrawled on the front of one home that was apparently marked to deter looters.

'There's been stories of people driving in from out of state to come and loot, which to me is like victimizing the victims all over again. How could you even think that?'

crumpf77 likened the scene to the haunting quiet seen at the climax of the film 'Planet of the Apes.'

'There was an eeriness to how quiet the entire area was," he wrote in an e-mail to CNN. 'The only sounds were the constant beeping of smoke detectors coming from the houses and the pounding of the waves.'

Another picture shows the Surf Club, a popular local hangout that suffered damage. We spoke to him on the phone while he was walking around that area, with waves audibly crashing in the background. 'The Surf Club was hammered, just hammered,' he said.
