Violent clashes in Cairo
- Jareen, CNN iReport producer
Violent clashes continue between protesters and security forces for the fifth consecutive day. Hundreds of thousands rallied in Tahrir square against the new constitutional declaration issued by president Morsi that gives him sweeping powers. At first, the clashes were concentrated in Mohamed Mahmoud street near Tahrir square and did not affect the protesters there until security forces attacked the square from the side of Qasr El Einy street. This attack caused the situation to escalated and lead to violent clashes. Security forces fired birdshot and tear gas while protesters fought back using rocks and molotov cocktails. Hundreds were injured. Many were suffocated by the tear gas while others were injured by birdshot pellets. Field hospitals were set at different points in the square to provide treatment for the injured.
