    Life Happens!

Hi, I'm Ron Niklasson. I am a 53 year old auto mechanic from Calhoun Georgia, and I am at my heaviest weight ever: 235 pounds. I've come to the realization that "life happens".

Five years ago, I was diagnosed with cancer. After undergoing surgery and radiation therapy, I decided I needed to get healthy. I quit smoking, breaking a 33 year, 2 1/2 pack a day habit. My wife and I put more emphasis on eating better food that we grow here on our small farm. Even with better food at home, eating fast food at lunch and not controlling my portions caused me to gain almost fifty pounds.

I began exercising, and applied for the 2012 CNN Fit Nation Triathlon Challenge. Because I didn't have the proper training and knowledge to do it on my own, "life happened". My excuses of "it's too cold, it's too dark, I'm too tired" derailed my fitness goals. It was way too easy to kick back on the couch and watch TV and devour a huge bowl of popcorn dripping with butter. With this kind of life happening, you can get diabetes, obesity and heart disease. I don't want to develop these issues.

This is why I need to be selected for the 2013 CNN Fit Nation Challenge: I cannot do it on my own! I need guidance by professionals to teach me what I need to know. I need new friends that are going through the same thing, so that we can push and support each other, and be pushed and supported when we need it.

I need to be able to say "life happens" and have it stand for a positive, new, healthy start and not an excuse to sit on my butt. Please help me to get healthy and have a LIFE happen!
