The fiscal cliff: Messages to Washington

    Avoiding my personal fiscal cliff

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Timonireport says he thinks President Obama and Congress will come to an agreement on the fiscal cliff before the December 31 deadline, but he believes it will only be a partial deal that will not provide a lasting solution. 'I fully expect them to kick the can farther down the road,' he said. His financial advice to Congress is for it to encourage Americans to buy products sold by local merchants. He says the best financial advice he learn as an adult is to try living with 80 precent of your income and save and invest the rest.
    - Jareen, CNN iReport producer

After 28 years, I had been earning $96,000 per year when I lost my job in the auto industry. My fiscal cliff avoidance strategy was simple: I sold off some assets to pay off my mortgage, and today I live as comfortably as I ever did on 1/2 my previous pay.
