The fiscal cliff: Messages to Washington

    Wasting Money

At the end of each FY, the Government goes on large spending sprees. The reason, Congress tells the the departments that if they do not spend all the money allocated to them they decrements the next years budget. A lot a time there are very good reasons that the money cannot be spent, it does not matter. Basically the Government wants the money spent. There are large amounts of money on new furniture, equipment that is not currently needed, etc. The Government needs to encourage departments that have year end money to give it back to the Treasury to help pay down the deficit. What also helps is that the return of funds should not carry any penalty because a department learned how to save money instead of spend money. Just think of the billions that could have been saved.
