How do little crabs do this?

It was last October when we went to Lian, Batangas City for my friend's 18th party. It was an overnight party. Later that morning, we walked by the shore and saw a couple of these things. I wondered what are those. You would first thought that it's feces but when you look closely, it's just sand. It made me think deeply how little crabs do these and what's their purpose?
