Tens of thousands of concerned citizens walked to Tahrir from several neighborhoods around Cairo on Tuesday (27 Nov) in a peaceful protest against President Mohamed Morsy’s constitutional declaration, issued on Thursday 22 November, that gave his presidential decisions immunity against judicial review, forbid the courts from dissolving either the current Constituent Assembly drafting the constitution or the Shura Council, and appointed a new prosecutor general.

  Throughout the day, people arrived from different Cairo neighborhoods in unity and in peace. Muslim, Christian, men, women, young and old came together to demand annulment of president's controversial decree.

  The Egyptian flag flew across the square, after different political groups instructed their members not to carry partisan banners or flags.

   Representatives from the lawyers syndicate, engineers, journalist syndicates, and students organized groups to march to Tahrir Square, called the road to negotiations.

    Besides actors and actresses, many prominent leaders were present in the protest. Nobel laureate and ex-presidential candidate Mohamed ElBaradei led one group from Shubra. Leftist activist and ex-presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahy headed another group from Mostafa Mahmoud Mosque.

   Only a few streets away, in Simon Bolivar square, tear gas remained thick in the air. The street was quiet, except for a few young boys mulling around, after violent clashes between a group of protestors and police escalated after a week of fighting. Young protesters hurled Molotov cocktails at police and security forces, who answered with tear gas canisters.
