My name is Julie - Portland, Oregon native. Former Naval Officer and graduate from the United States Naval Academy. Yes Yes!! Go Navy Beat Army! And most of all Loving wife and mother of two little buggers. I really want to be a part of the Tri Challenge for many reasons. I'm a full time working mom while my wonderful husband stays home with our kids. I always say he has the tougher job. I’m very lucky. In 2011 I was involved in a serious car accident on the freeway while on the job. An intoxicated first time driver ran out of gas and smashed into my driver side front panel and door. She struck me at 70 MPH. Needless to say, I suffered many injuries and lost full mobility of my neck - this was hard for me to digest. I always considered myself someone who was strong and took care of myself and I learned quickly that life could easily change in a split second. The year continued to unravel when I suffered 2 miscarriages and subsequently gained 30 lbs. I felt really down about myself and my lack of physical capability. However, it did open my eyes to all the things I'm capable of and the great things in life that I've been fortunate to be a part of - more importantly the change I contribute in the world. Things began to make a turn and I became pregnant again and delivered a beautiful 9.5 lb baby girl a few months ago. My goal in life is to be a role model to my family and inspire young women -- I truly believe that if you set your mind to something you can accomplish anything. I've never participated in a Triathlon and this is something that I've ALWAYS wanted to be a part of but never found the time. I gained an additional 45 lbs when I was pregnant and have lost half the weight. I want to lose the baby jiggle and know that being a part of the challenge will not only inspire and motivate me but also send a positive message that physical limitations don’t always interfere with doing something great. I'm functional and optimistic that I'll regain range of motion in the near future. If not, then I've learned to adjust with this injury and make the most of it. Life is good.
