    Christmas in Disaster

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     alleebeth says people are still recovering in Long Beach, New York, more than one month after Superstorm Sandy hit the area. But despite disaster and debris, she says people are finding ways to celebrate the holidays. 'As I went walking on the beach, I found this Christmas wreath attached to a bench,' she said. She explains that the bench was supposed to sit 12 feet higher on the beach's boardwalk, which is now destroyed. 'My heart felt happy and sad. Obviously there is love, but recovery is still slow and painful,' she said.

    It was quiet, too quiet. Today I was in Long Beach, NY, a community near New York CIty that was heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

     

    Six weeks ago Long Beach was a busy & hip area of NY's Long Island. Its proximity to NYC is perfect for those who want to be close to the city but feel a million miles away.

     

    With a huge surfing community & gorgeous miles of beach, this neighborhood will thrive again, I'm sure.

     

    These photos are a reminder of how precious our Earth & our lives can be. Cherish every day & Have a very Happy Holiday Season!
