100 places to eat like a local

Five star food, dive bar in Wisconsin

It was a random stop at a local dive bar restaurant when we discovered this little gem Skaliwags in Algoma Wisconsin. Don’t let the name or location change your mind. This place is a gem…a diamond in the rough. The restaurant is located in a small bar in the quaint town of Algoma Wisconsin , which is part of the Door Penisula, and is well worth the stop. Upon entering, we were greeted with a down to earth smile by the owner Chef Chris Wiltfang. He promptly ordered us up a great bottle of French red wine and helped us navigate the dizzying display of amazing food selections on the casual chalkboard menu. In all our visits to great restaurants this was the only time ever that the chef/owner greeted us at the door. We excitedly agreed with his choices. And he toasted the evening which was a nice touch and then went back on to the kitchen.

Our food was creatively plated and delicious. Well worth the stop if you are in Wisconsin. Ideally I think this place deserves a Michelin star….but then the secret would be out. The seafood is exceptionally fresh. Skaliways is located at 312 Clark Street, Algoam Wisconsin. (920) 487-8092
