Newtown school shooting: Thoughts and tributes

    Shooting in Connecticut

I had thought long and hard today about whether I would post anything on my Facebook page, or any other forum, about the gun control debate in light of the national tragedy (there is nothing else to call it) that happened in Connecticut today. What happened will scar our national psyche for a long time to come. It is beyond words and beyond comprehension. Twenty young lives gone. What happened is also beyond politics. It will fuel the national gun control debate for a long time to come. But tonight is not the time for that debate. It is a time for a lot of families in Connecticut to grieve and to gather together. I will not contribute to anyone's pain tonight by speaking about my views on gun control and gun ownership. The time for that will come soon enough. I understand some will not agree with me. That is fine; we all have the right to think and believe and act (within reason and legal limits) as we see fit. I believe however that tonight is a time for reflection and prayer.
