As dedicated LAUSD teachers my wife and I are devastated with what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. There are no words to describe this horrific national tragedy, a tragedy that took the lives of many innocent young children and staff. I can guarantee that every teacher in this country was affected by the number of students killed, and their age. As a parent and public school teacher my heart and prayers go out to the families. The following are suggestions and recommendation: 1) In regards to school safety, the main entrance to a school is the key to safety. Having a staff member or parent volunteer at the main entrance to monitor visitors should be mandatory because it provides the first layer of defense or most importantly the first warning of trouble. The school should be electronically wired to have an emergency button notification system that automatically sets off a siren indicating trouble on school grounds, lock all doors! This notification system should also be set up to automatically notify police. 2) Another option is to have an armed school police officer at EVERY school in this coutry, Prevention is also key. 3) Gun Control. I would love to see President Obama visit Newtown, CT. next Friday 12/21 for a special memorial to the victims that includes a one minute national moment of silence for the children and staff that so tragically lost their lives (9:30 am moment of silence).
