Don't just blame the mentally ill

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     omekongo told me, 'Everyone now seems to have an opinion about the mentally ill and children. I think because the mentally ill are not out there in the media, it'll be easy for the conversation to shift towards blaming them. I just don't want to see that happen and I'm starting to see it slowly and it bothers me...a lot.'
    - hhanks, CNN iReport producer

So far the conversation on access to guns in America has generally been productive. Some pockets of the conversation, however, are putting too much blame on the mentally ill. While that should be a part of the discussion, it's too easy to just blame the mentally ill. Our conversation must remain holistic and look at all issues relating to gun violence in America from our entertainment culture to our easy access to getting guns.
