Newtown school shooting: Thoughts and tributes

    More from chzman

    Police State

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     chzman told me, 'My initial reaction was the feeling of our local school system being turned into a modern prison,, aplace that may even intimidate our young children. This is worse that reliving 9/11. After 9/11, we watched silently as our country started signing away our liberty and rights with the passage of what we all thought was wise legislation in the Patriot Act. What new laws should we expect from this event?' '
    - hhanks, CNN iReport producer

These events in our country must stop. We can’t live like this any longer. Like our President said yesterday. “Our country has not done enough to protect its children and we will have to change.” We all should expect to see our children attending school in what looks like a prison. Home schooling may be an option, as long as free, sane and responsible Americans are still permitted to arm themselves.

    Thank You
    Chuck Burkhard

    Update:

Here is the message that was posted on Facebook by our School District on 12/18 at 11:00 AM:

This is the follow up Alert Now call sent out to our Students and their Families on 12/17/12 regarding the safety and security of your children.

We have a wonderful group of students and a supportive community. We provide safety training and practice drills on a regular basis. But as with all school systems there are things that we can do better. We have started the process of reviewing every aspect of security in the district. Today, we met with local law enforcement and are putting a plan together that will enhance the level of security in our schools. The adjustments to our procedures will make access to the facilities more restrictive. Some may find the procedures that are put into place over the next several days and weeks inconvenient. We must weigh these inconveniences against the need to create the safest, most
secure environment for our students and staff that is possible. More information will be provided on these adjustments through our Elementary and High School offices as they are put into place. I want to assure you that the number one priority of all of the Windber Area School District staff is, and always will be student safety. I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Thank you
