On RH Bill in the Philippines

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     iReporter Sergiom says the passing of the Philippines Reproductive Health Bill into law will prove a victory for women's rights in the country. The bill was passed by the country's House of Representatives and Senate earlier this month, and was signed into law by President Benigno Aquino a few days ago, local media has reported. The bill aimed to provide reproductive health education to students between 10 and 19 years of age. "Filipino women have long aspired to have access to a decent reproductive health care," he said. "The passage of the bill into law will save many lives."

Women’s groups have cheered for the passage of RH Bill into law here in the Philippines. The feminist groups’ websites hailed the new law as victory for women’s rights in the Philippines. Filipino women have long aspired to have access to a decent reproductive health-care. Many women from low-income groups usually bear so many children since they don’t have access to reproductive health-care.

The passage of RH Bill into law will definitely help poor women in the Philippines to have effective means of ensuring their survival while giving birth. Such would also give many Filipino women the right to decide on how many children to bear during their lifetimes. Filipino women can now look for better opportunities to use their talents and skills instead of just being mere house-keepers for their husbands.

The passage of RH Bill into law would also prevent the spread of sexually-transmitted diseases in the Philippines. There are instances that condoms are banned by city ordinances in many parts of the Philippines. The passage of RH Bill into law will certainly eliminate all the barriers that have been erected by some city and town officials on the use of condoms for safe sex. Hence, the passage of RH Bill into law will save many lives in the Philippines.
