Storms Pummel Butte County- Downed Trees and Power Lines
One tree that fell on Foothill Boulevard at approximately 3:00 p.m. today hit power lines and caused them to snap. CalFire spokespersons at the scene stated that not only can the lines arc for up to 20 feet, but when the ground is saturated the whole area can be electrically charged.
This causes the ground and roads to be dangerous for a great distance. If a person were to step in just the wrong place he or she could be electrocuted even though they are nowhere near the power line.
If you come across a downed line, stay as far as possible away and call 911 immediately to report the danger.
