What was your best moment of 2012?

Havasu Falls, Grand Canyon National Park

After my graduation from vet school, I moved to Central America, volunteering my veterinary services in animal shelters. When I returned home to Clearwater, Florida I found that even veterinarians had difficulty finding work in a struggling economy.

As I became increasingly disillusioned with the what few options were available to me, I was offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity -- to raft the Colorado River from Lake Powell to Lake Mead and live inside the Grand Canyon for 17 days.

My best moment of 2012 was discovering Havasu Falls, a largely untouched network of travertine waterfalls. We had the great fortune of having the waterfalls to ourselves and experienced their beauty as the Havasupais must have years ago.

The Grand Canyon was a very solidifying experience for me -- giving me a much-needed escape from the toilet bowl of depression I was circling and giving me a chance to step back and realize what's really important in life... Friends, family, health, the constant pursuit of adventure and discovery that is maddening to others but exhilarating to us, these things make us who we are and drive us to become who we aspire to be, and for that I am thankful.
