VW Living 1971-1973
My girlfriend and I went to Europe in June 1971 on a two to three month leave of absence from work. We came back married 8 years later. We purchased a 1968 Combie Van with a 1200 CC engine in Amsterdam in front of the American Express for $475. We built it out with a queen size bed and added a camping gas stove. We added tapestry curtain and began our journey which took us as far north as Norway and as far south as Morocco.
We frequently picked up hitch hikers from all over the world who shared meals and expenses. We were towed into Athens and ended up with $50 and a fixed bus when we met a Canadian couple on a beach. I gave them my résumé and ended up working on a traffic study of Athens making $800 a month. It was rags to riches for nine months.
We left our bus and traveled to Israel where we worked on Kibutz Ginisar on the Sea of Galalee for three months before touring Israel for another month. After a few months on the Greek islands we returned to Athens to sell our bus.
We then flew to Melbourne Australia where my girlfriend got a job with Qantas. A week before our holiday we were married so I could travel for free. It was an economic merger that still provides joy.
