CNN PRODUCER NOTE iReporter michstate met former U.S. President George H.W. Bush at the Governor's Gala in Detroit, Michigan, in 1992, where this picture was taken. The meeting -- his third with the 41st U.S president -- was particularly interesting for our iReporter, who has worked on political campaigns for both major parties since 1964, as he is a presidential historian. "Without bi-partisan compromise, you have no republic and nothing gets done -- Bush was willing to do that," he said. "The Americans with Disabilities Act [passed by Bush] was a wonderful accomplishment." He said modern politicians would do well to emulate Bush's willingness to work across the political divide.

I have met President George H.W. Bush any number of times since 1988 and find him to be a warm, genuinely good man. I'm a former Democratic Party county chairman from Michigan so Mr. Bush and I did not often agree on policy. But I never once, then or now, questioned his motives or integrity. He is one man that when you say "the Honorable George Bush" you can mean it. He is a strong politician but not afraid to work with Democrats to do what is right for the nation, including on the sacred Republican issue of tax increases when the nation needed it. It may have cost him the Presidency but he always, always puts country first. Oh, how I wish he was leading the Republican Party today. I hope that some of them will follow his example. Thank you, Mr. President. Get well soon.
