President Bush has made his love for Texas A&M University know many times. He chose Texas A&M as the home of his library. His love for my alma mater enabled me and countless other members of the Texas A&M University Singing Cadets to perform for him numerous times. This included singing God Bless the USA with him when he was made an Honorary Singing Cadet and accepted our letterman sweater. One of the most memorable times that I have, singing for him and his family happened on his birthday in 2009. We were invited to sing as a surprise present for him in Kennebunkport, Maine. Keeping all of us hidden in the tiny seaside town was not easy, but we managed. Finally the night of the performance came, however President Bush fell ill and had to leave before we could sing for him. We still got to sing for the guest and the rest of this family (including his son President Bush and the First Lady). Not giving up on getting to surprise him, Former First Lady Barbra Bush invited us to the Private Residence later that week. Our entire group was able to tour the Bush compound and visit with family members. Finally, our time came to sing for him. So we all crowded into the living room and sung for the President. While this was not the first time I’ve gotten to see or sing for him, it was really special as this would be the last time I got to perform for him in such an intimate setting.
I know that the Aggie families thoughts and prayers are with you President Bush!!! We know that you can BTHO this illness! Gig ‘Em
