When I was growing up in the 70's, early 80's, we had  the pop up top VW vant. We drove a cross the country from California to Michigan every summer. We had the curtairns to put across the windshield area, and they would put a board across the front seats, then my sleeping bag went on top of that! We also camped in it across Canada in around 1979, and the best thing I remember is getting dressed in the morning, trying to tell my mom that a black bear was right outside the camper, looking through a trash can, and she didn't believe me, When she turned around and saw the bear, she screamed! On that trip, we had to keep push starting the van. I would be in the back, and my mom in the drivers seat, my dad would have the drivers door open and sort of run and hop in (my mom shifting over to her seat at the same time) and pop the clutch and off we would go!!! Good times. RIP VW vans :)
