I lived for many years in an old VW Bus. At one point I bought a 1969 Deluxe with only 93,000 miles from the original owner for $200. It ran, but had a dropped valve seat, so I swapped in two new heads and it was good to go. Two sets of heads later, I had driven it to 290,000 miles with no problems, other than one of the front shock towers had almost completely rusted off. It took me 5.5 hours to swap in another used front end, by myself! At 390,000 miles it needed a new engine (lots of rattling noises) When I tore it down to rebuild it , everything was worn completely out and not worth saving, so I opted for a new long block, which cost $1100 at the time. After that I, drove it to 430,000 miles, still with the original transmission! I finally ended up selling it, minus the engine, for $200...
