    Bandits in army uniform mount roadblock in Delta

    A GROUP of armed robbers in army uniform mounted roadblock at Effurun, near Warri, Thursday, killing a driver and injuring many others in a shooting spree.

    Saturday Vanguard gathered that the incident, which occurred at about 10.00 am caused a major stir in the twin cities of Effurun and Warri.

    According to a source, “At about 10.00 hours, Thursday, December 27, an armed gang dressed in Nigerian Army uniform mounted a road block , near the Water Resources in Effurun, near Warri in Delta state. They seemed to be waiting for a particular vehicle.

    “When their expectation was dashed, they started shooting sporadically; many people were injured, as they ran for dear life. A young man driving a black car was shot dead,ramming his car into a pole,” he added.

    There were fears, yesterday, that if the trend was not checked, the safety of people in Effurun and Warri will be jeopardized as law-abiding citizens were bound to stop for check by security agents in army uniform”.An activist, who preferred anonymity called on the authorities of the security agencies not to allow the uniforms of their personnel to fall into the hands of criminals, who would wear them to commit heinous crimes.

    Kidnapper in police net
    Meantime, an alleged kidnapper, Kingsley, who came to collect the ransom paid into his account at a bank in Agbor has been arrested by police detectives.

    His gang threatened a woman, Mrs. Orumgbe Veronica, through GSM phone numbers, 08168113653, 08168837108, 08138762748, 08121104769 to pay N50 million ransom or she would be kidnapped on December 8.

    The police, acting on a tip off, contacted the various service providers and laid a trap for them. As Kingsley strolled into the bank to collect the money, detectives moved in and nabbed him.When he was searched, Nokia GSM phone number, 08168113653, with which the threat calls were made and threat messages sent was recovered. Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba confirmed his arrest to Saturday Vanguard.

    Saturday Vanguard, however, gathered that Kingsley, who confessed to the crime was charged to court yesterday and was remanded in Agbor prison until January 25.
