Can we make our schools safer?
Yes, we can. In Tornado alley, many homes are built with safe rooms that are so heavy built and reinforced it would take a bulldozer to break it open. It is the same way with some houses that use these rooms to flee to in case of attackers entering the home.
Why not our schools?
All the students and teachers need is a minute of warning to funnel the children inside.
That warning time could come in the form of a heavily fortified fence with one entrance and guarded. Even if the attacker gets past the barrier a warning would have already.
