In Remembrance of 2012
Filled with life, love, and discovery, 2012 was quite memorable. From tragedy to triumphs to baby mama reality shows, 2012 crowded social networking with mega tweets and Facebook postings. Let’s take a brief look back on a few of the most notable events.
2012 Presidential Race
The President Obama and Mitt Romney campaigns were the ugliest and expensive many have seen in U.S. history. Glorified promises laced with racial divides were key components that divert Americans’ attention from the real issues. Neither political party explained how they would work for the American people. Neither party illustrated how they would impart the laws of the Constitution. It was outright political warfare—politicians against “We the People”. By the way, President Obama and Mitt Romney enjoyed lunch together on November 28, 2012. How sweet.
Gun Control, Asperger’s Syndrome, and Class Warfare
Again, the horror of the Sandy Hook massacre diverted America’s attention. This tragic event put America’s most innocent at the forefront—our children—and the dangers of mental illness and the easy access to guns. Autism became a scapegoat. Those who were not familiar with Asperger’s Syndrome or Autism came to believe that the once docile disease was now a dangerous suspect. Additionally, the murderer was from a wealthy family and was described as a mentally disturbed young man.
Many have raised concern that if this murderer had been a man of color, he would have been called a mass murderer. So, 2012 will go down in history as the year that an Autistic, mentally disabled man kills 26 people and himself and it will all be blamed on Asperger’s Syndrome.
Lastly, gun control advocates rushed to their podiums to plead with President Obama to implement a national law to outlaw gun ownership. The NRA stood their ground and made it very clear it isn’t the gun that is the problem; but the criminal who acquire illegally.
Church Pedophiles on Parade
Social media has been the enemy of pedophile preachers. From Eddie Long to the Jacksonville, Florida church, The Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, that banned its children so they could retain their convicted pedophile pastor. If anyone was on the fence about religion in 2012, they surely fell off due to these hideous reports. Very few ministers publically condemned these actions in 2012, leaving those with fragile faith lingering in the wilderness.
Unreal Reality Shows
From the now defunct and unnecessary brain-pain, The Jersey Shore to latest pitiful pop phenomenon, Honey Boo Boo. These are examples of intellectually painful and mind-altering media messes that have distracted the masses from dealing with real life. Then, there is the Caucasian baby mama show, Sister Wives and the announcement of the latest Black American show, All My Babies’ Mamas. Who comes up with this stuff?
In Retrospect and Wishful Thinking
I hope that 2013 will bring us accountable and responsible politicians, intellectual stimulating dialogue, television shows, relevant news reports, church leadership accountability and responsibility, and industrial as well as technical American innovation. I can only hope.
