The George H.W. Bush years: Your take

    More from jottum

George H.W. Bush an American Hero

President George H.W. Bush was a great president. He aided Kuwait from being invaded by Iraq. The passage of the Americans with disability act by president 41 afforded many benefits to those living with disabilities. His efforts in Berlin and the Soviet Union should never be forgotten.

When I was 9 years old I had the privilege of seeing President George H.W. Bush. It was the spring of 1987 and the then vice president gave the 89th commencement speech at my aunt's graduation from the University of Texas El Paso. I remember having a feeling of shock when the vice president crossed the stage. I was astonished to see someone of such importance in person. Still I am proud to say that I saw president 41 in person.

I remember President H.W. Bush protecting Kuwait from Iraq in Desert Storm. Iraq didn't stand a chance when attacked by Naval ships, Air Force jets, and army and marine soldiers. The easy victory increased confidence in our military. For this and other acts he received the presidential medal of freedom, a medal bestowed on individuals that have contributed to national security and world peace.

Thanks to the passage of the American with Disability act, all buildings built after the act had to be built with accessibility to those living with a disability. Also, older building were required to remove anything that would be a barrier to entry. Places like malls and grocery stores added ramps and hand rails to give easier access to the people living with a disability. It is because of the ADA act that city buses have hydraulic lifts for wheel chair. In college I had a friend with Spina Bifida. A via bus took him round trip from his home to school; thanks to the transportation afforded to him by the ADA bill.

President H.W. Bush will go down in the history books as the president who helped ease the turmoil in the breakup of the Soviet Union. He prevented a possible counter revolution. Also, he played a part in the eventual bring down of the Berlin Wall through talks with Kolh, Chancellor of West Germany 1989-93, and Gorbachev, president of the Soviet Union 1988-91. After the fall of the Berlin Wall we saw the unifying of Germany.

George H.W. Bush was a great president. He will be remembered for freeing Kuwait from Iraq in the 1991 Gulf War. His ADA act changed the life of many, by giving much needed assistance to those living with disabilities. Thanks to President H.W. Bush's diplomacy the Berlin Wall fell and Germany was reunited. Through talks President Bush had with Russian president Gorbachev, the Soviet Union broke up peacefully. Also, the United States and Russian each agreed to eliminate a portion of its nuclear weapons. For all these reason President H.W. Bush is an American Hero.
