    Gun control debate: Background checks

I Have an Obligation to Own an Assault Weapon, Not Only the Right

It is really crucial for Second Amendment supporters to focus on the real reason we have the Second Amendment and try to stay away from all the rhetoric that gets intertwined in the gun control debate. What I do not see as "our" focus in the media is the true reason behind the Second Amendment and the power it grants the people to protect themselves from a tyrannical government. The Second Amendment gives us the right to self-defense; it gives us the right to defend our property as well as the republic from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

From Wikipedia: “An enemy or foe is a relativist term for an entity, whether an individual or a group, that is seen as forcefully adverse or threatening. The concept of an enemy has been observed to be "basic for both individuals and communities". The term "enemy" serves the social function of designating a particular entity as a threat, thereby invoking an intense emotional response to that entity.”

Personally, I don’t think a lot of people really understand why the Second Amendment was added to the Constitution and how critically important it really is to our freedom. It is the final check and balance which gives the people the last say in how they are governed. If our government begins to forget its place in our society’s management and resorts to tyranny in order to become the controller rather than the controlled, we have the means to resolve the problem by force, if necessary.

We all hear how the rights of the sportsman will be protected in gun control legislation as if that is some panacea to preserving our Second Amendment rights. EVERY TIME this is brought up buy any gun control supporter we need to remind them that the Second Amendment is not there to protect anyone’s privilege to hunt. Hunting is not just a sport, it is wildlife management. Neither has anything to do with the Second Amendment.

We also hear how guns need to be regulated to reduce gun violence in our country and banning assault weapons is a key point in reducing the casualty numbers. Focusing on the reduction of violent crime across the board in the US the last 10 years (as more Americans have exercised their Second Amendment rights) shows how effective bearing arms by the public has been. Many more people are alive today than have died in mass shootings because we are beginning to arm ourselves as a nation for personal protection. Americans arming themselves is a response to the failure of our legal system’s laws and penalties not being a strong enough deterrent to individuals engaging in criminal acts. We placed trust in our Government to protect us. Our Government has failed in doing so.

We need to make a concerted effort to take a stand that we, as gun owners, are the keepers and true defenders of the Second Amendment and many of us are bearing arms solely to defend our Constitution as many of us (including myself) have taken an oath to do. Regardless if you are active or inactive military, active in law enforcement or retired, the oath you have taken is not one that ends with your active service. If you truly believe in our Constitution then you have a obligation to defend it by any means necessary. I will give my life in defense of my Constitutional Rights so my children can live their lives as free men and women and so should the parents of every child.

When the question is asked, why do you need an assault weapon with a 30 round magazine? The answer we give in response should be: "To give me the greatest chance at being successful in defending the Constitution of The United States against a well-armed enemy, foreign OR DOMESTIC".

What we need to do as defenders of the Constitution of The United States is have some discussion on how we can help the American people understand, we are not gun nuts, we are intelligent law respecting people that really do support the vision of our founders and we do want to preserve the republic they envisioned and stand ready with our lives and our arms to do so. We need to make it very clear to our government and the politicians supporting gun control measures; we will defend the Second Amendment by force and any attempt to infringe on the Second Amendment will be considered tyranny and that is the specific act that gives us the Constitutional right to use force in defense of the Constitution of The United States.
