Get Rid Of The Gas Tax?

The Governor of Virginia is proposing eliminating the state sales tax on gasoline and increasing the sales tax on everything else from 5% to 5.8%. Virginia is expected to run out of money to pay for its roads by 2017 using the current system. With vehicles getting more mpg the effective tax is going lower. EV's which use no gasoline currently pay no taxes to support the roads they use. Moving to a general sales tax to support the roads will penalize those who use mass transit.
