    Huell Howser: California Icon.

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     donnaclare told me, 'I love the State of California....love, love, love it. I came here on a visit after living in Chicago for ten years and fell in love with it and knew this where I should be. So I moved here. Having originally been from Belize, I never had such a feeling as when I moved to California. One day I was watching Huell's show "California Gold" and realized that he felt the same way. He had a gentleness and compassion about him for the State of California, and not just for the well-known aspects of California, such as Hollywood, but for the off the beaten path places, such as small towns no one has ever head of before, or some random patch of poppy field or a small stream out in the middle of the desert.'

    I cried when I heard the news of Huell Howser's passing. Huell Howser appreciated the grandeur as well as the simplistic attributes of this beautiful State of California. Whether Huell was on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, on Route 66, in Death Valley, or in Sacramento, he covered all four corners of California, and lots of little nooks and crannies in-between. Huell spoke with effortless passion, depth and appreciation of this beautiful Golden State. Whether he was simply sitting in a field of California poppies or on top of Mount Whitney, Huell exuded the same energy of excitement and appreciation wherever he was "Visiting." Who else could explain the history of the huge landmark flagpole that sits in the middle of the small town of Livermore with such passion the way Huell did? I'll never forget the day when I was sitting at a job in Santa Monica and someone came and said, "Huell Howser's outside." I left my desk in a hurry only to catch him walking off in the distance. I was very happy to have seen him even from that perspective. He will be greatly missed. Huell Howser is a true California icon indeed.
