    Snow in Jerusalem

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Catholic priest joelsdb, who is currently studying in Jerusalem, captured these beautiful images of the holy city on Thursday, and found the unusual weather had the welcome result of bringing the city's communities together. "Jews, Arabs, and tourists have come out to play in the snow," he said. "Everyone is enjoying this rare moment in Jerusalem." He said a Jesuit priest in the house where he is staying told him that such weather had not been seen since at least 1973.

    Wind and rain, hail and snow, bless the Lord!

    These words are similar to those from the Book of Daniel (chapter 3) in the Bible. They can as well be the chronology of these past few days. Today, Jerusalem is covered with snow.

    The Church of the Holy Sepulchre which normally sees a lot of people even at dawn had only a handful of pilgrims in the first few hours of its opening. More from the outside than inside, the Old City is majestic to behold as it received the light of day. The top of the walls and rooftops, the trees and the pavements are coated with snow.

    Towards midmorning the city is still quiet save for some occasional siren. The snow continues to fall. And since Jerusalem is not used to this magnitude of snow, there will be little activity the whole day--no work and no school.
    It looks like shabbat came a day earlier.
