    Snow Overwhelms Jerusalem

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     iReporter jerusalemite has lived in Jerusalem since 1998 but says this is the worst snow she's seen in the holy city for a long time. Her images, taken around her neighborhood in Kiryat Shmuel, document the damage from several inches of snow that fell overnight and into Thursday morning. Roads in and out of the city were closed until only a few hours ago, she said, while public transport was almost completely halted. The city was prepared for the weather, however, she says: "The homeless were taken off the streets and into shelters and the forecast was very accurate," she said. Despite the picturesque scenes, however, she says she couldn't help thinking of the plight of Syrian refugees stranded in similar freezing conditions only a few hundred miles away. "Temperatures are very low and it must be just unimaginable -- it's below freezing and there's thousands in need," she said.

The Middle East is not known for it's snow, so when we do get a significant snowfall it's a big deal. Trees crash; transportation halts, everyone gets the day off and Jerusalem is cut off from the world--all roads in and out were closed for a few hours today.
