Limit Excess before Guns
I want to offer a slightly different perspective on the “gun problem” in the United States. I am a gun owner that left the NRA. I am a six year veteran of the US Navy. I own guns that would be classified as hunting weapons and assault rifles and a couple of handguns. Dear US Government please explain why I should trust you? The United States has not had a functional budget on time in two years or more. A balanced budget seems unattainable. The government spends money like a sailor on shore leave. Campaign promises are expected to be broken it is one of the very few things we as citizens can count on. However, the oath of office to serve the Constitution of the United States is expected to be upheld. That means making hard decisions that might mean you don’t get re-elected. Deciding something for the good of the entire country as balanced against or with your constituents. Sometimes you have to compromise, aren’t most of you married? We need to cut spending and raise revenue and lower the deficit. All the gun talk is a distraction from what you should really be doing. There are plenty of unenforced gun laws more won’t fix it. If you want to make a new law how about a real simple one? Every gun sold must be sold with a locking mechanism. Every gun I own is locked, or disassembled to a non-functioning state with a part locked up. With all that said here’s the main point.
Article I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the pres; or the right of the people to assemble, and petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Article II
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
Article I exists because Article II is right behind it. Before you make a gun law, make a sustainable budget. Before you make a gun law make realistic reductions of expenditures. Before you make a gun law revise the tax code so ordinary wage earners are taxed at the same rate as capital gains. A gunfight will make headlines and distract many while you blow smoke up our behinds. But another gun law will not accomplish what you’re entrusted to do. The government of the United States is bascially non-functional. It is not living up to its day to day responsibilities that we citizens have entrusted it with. Its’ unable to curtail it’s appetite for spending to the point where it is currently unsustainable. Before you limit my freedom limit your excesses. To my fellow citizens remember next election one simple word anti-incumbent.
