This iReport is part of an assignment:
Gun control debate: Background checks
Let us talk about Gun Control
Interview with a Police chief:
People always get a bit crazy after tragedies and big events. I call it the knee jerk. The doc has hit you with the hammer and now your knee moves involuntarily.
I would like to start this whole thing off with a statement that most people will find offensive. People pushing for bans are cowards. They want to hide the fact that people can be truly awful behind something else. They refuse to acknowledge the fact that people can do the horrible things. There doesn’t have to be a reason, there doesn’t have to be any provocation.
A lot of people talk about how no one needs assault rifles or high capacity magazines. I have often found when I ask these people why they say that I usually get the response of “well why do you”. So finally being frustrated with the knee jerk band wagoneers response, I decided to ask someone who would probably know. I went to our police station and asked the chief “Why do you feel that your officers need high capacity magazines and assault rifles?”
His answer was simple “It is best to be prepared for anything.” He brought up the LA riots that shut down a large section of that city for days, killing 53 injuring 2500 or so people. He also mentioned the North Hollywood bank robbery where two suspects with armor and how the handguns of the officers involved were useless. “In short”, he said “It is better to have them and not need them then need them and not have them.”
“So do you feel that people who are not a part of any security or police force need these assault weapons or high cap mags?”
“If they feel the need to own them I would encourage it” The chief said “If I feel it necessary to arm my officers with them then there is probably a reason for it…”
“… Most people don’t like the prospect of killing another human; but I would be willing to bet that the person breaking into your house is not one of those people. So it comes down to what are your positions, your security, and your family worth to you? The police don’t live in your house; you live in your house. Just because we live in America does not mean that we are free from bad people.”
So there you have it. I don’t like to make posts like this as much as I like commenting but I figured that little story was worth sharing.
