    Why I own an AR-15

Like some have already posted, it is a fun rifle to shoot. While the technology of the specific rifle is more than 40 years old and can be finicky in dirty conditions, it works well and is good for fundamentals training. It is much easier to teach proper marksmanship with than with a higher caliber, bolt-action rifle. The fundamentals learned with an AR-type of rifle translates to other firearms. Plus they are relatively economical for the beginning shooter.

I own one to stay up on my marksmanship training for the reserves. It is similar to my issued weapon and I can go to the range more than once every six months. I didn't buy it for it's looks; there are others on the market that look better. I didn't buy it to 'gear up' with scopes or laser sights, but to just practice something that I love to do with a familiar piece of equipment.

There are many other rifles on the market that are more lethal than the AR, but look more benign. Basing a ban because of a 'look' or a non-functioning feature is ignorance and fear at their greatest. A 22 caliber rifle (or handgun) is just as lethal as an AR or AK type of rifle.
