fired for calling out sick due to having flu virus
I have a doctors note and was under a doctor's care. I was out sick for 4 days for having the flu. I applied for a leave of absence from work. They denied me for working only 923 hours out of 1,000 hours during the past couple months. I returned to work in my uniform and was immediately sat down and fired for being out sick for four days, even with having doctors' notes. My manager, named Margie, also falsely accused me of calling out of work on December 23rd of this prior month. I said that it was false accusations and I did work the night of the 23rd as I remember precisely working. Although my manager was out on Christmas vacation during the week prior to Christmas and did not return to work until after the new year, she did not believe my statements. I also have proof on my time clock log in sheet that I did in fact work on the 23rd. The human resource department contacted me to verify that they have evidence that I did in fact work on the 23rd of December. However, I was not paid for that work day. Ultimately, I was fired for having the flu and out sick for four days. Mind you, I work in a hospital facility in the food service department. I am responsible for serving patients and handling their food. I thought it was important for me to no be around patients who are already suffering with extreme illnesses because I could hurt them with my illness. The hospital does not seem to care about whether or not their employees are sick. They still expect them to report to work and handle patients. Although their is a flu epidemic. Hospitals of all places should be trying to prevent the spread of flu virus. However it seems the opposite. I was an employee of Virtua Memorial Hospital of Mount Holly, NJ. I worked in the food service department. The company in charge of Virtua's food service department is called Sodexxo. I have been an employee for over two years. My name is Mary Angelina Stanton. And as of January 9th 2013 I was fired for being out sick with the flu virus. I want everyone to be very cautious about the flu prevention. And even if you are a patient being treated in a hospital facility, you may not be safe because employees are capable of spreading illness if reporting to work sick. The employees are expected to report to work at all costs. I have witnessed many times other employees who came to work and were very ill. Some employees were also food service workers.
