Gun control debate: Background checks
An AK47 for Christmas?
Before the ban went into place I bought 4 guns, a TEK 22 a TEK 9 and two SKS with folding stocks, muzzle suppressors, and a bushel basket of 30 shot magazines.
I shot the TEK 22 one time and the rest remained in the gun cabinet for close to 15 years before I started to trade and sell them and most of the magazines off. I got too comfortable with the idea that the gun grabbers had no traction and quite simply I had bills to pay.
Personally I would rather have a Winchester 94-22, a pre 1964 30-30 and a 32 special more than anything else but I consider those guns on my budget to be luxury items.
SO why not buy one of those lever action guns now? Well I find myself again buying guns that would be targeted in a potential ban such as my new AK47 and additional 30 round magazines.
As long as I know that these types of firearms are available I have no interest in owning one, but I am being told that because another mentally ill person went on a shooting spree that myself and 80 million other gun owners are going to be punished. These firearms targeted to be banned and if successful will not be available. I would rather have one and not need it than need one and not have it.
I want the Winchesters, but in the current climate I feel that I need to re-evaluate my gun collection. I have guns for squirrel hunting, for rabbit, turkey, and deer, for self defense against criminals. They are like tools, a specific tool for a specific purpose.
A military "style" firearm is not a military firearm, its not a machine gun, or rocket launcher, or even a grenade launcher. Putting all the other dressing on a semi auto platform is still really just dressing, like putting a Corvette body on a Pinto frame. Some people think they look cool. In reality with the exception of a detachable magazine they are the same as my Ruger 44.
NO the high capacity magazines are not for hunting, that has nothing to do with it, high capacity magazines are one of the tools used in self defense. What the detachable magazine means is that you can put a 5 shot magazine in and hunt with that scary ole black rifle or a 30 shot magazine in for self defense. I'd rather not have to reload after 5 rounds are fired in the 44.
People are screaming that gun owners should have a mental health screening to own a gun but call it offensive to suggest that we create a National Database of people with severe mental illness. People that are adjudicated a danger to themselves or others should be screened against the database to prevent them from buying a gun.
In the zeal to demonize gun owners an interactive map of gun owners is published in New York but a map showing where the mentally insane are would be a violation of their civil rights? Yet that same map has placed Judges, Law Enforcement, Women hiding from abusive spouses and yes even non permit holders in danger.
How can we have a dialogue about these issues when gun control proponents openly say that a ban is nothing more than another step towards confiscation. Why shouldn't we as firearms owners dig in our heels when faced with the knowledge that nothing we agree to now is enough tomorrow? Why give in when we receive nothing in return?
So my wife who does not hunt or shoot bought me an AK47 that will probably stay in the gun cabinet next to the last SKS. I have a bushel basket of high capacity magazines coming, I'll order a folding stock and restock my ammunition locker over the next few weeks. This time I'll keep them all.
WHY? some might ask, Well, I believe in the Second Amendment, and believe in the wisdom of the founding fathers when they included the right to bear arms. By remaining strong and vigilant in the face of the enemies of freedom I honor my families sacrifices over the generations in the fight to keep this country free.
Who are the enemies of freedom you ask? You have only to look to those who would divide the country and turn family against family and neighbor against neighbor.
Look to those who would create a war on guns, without understanding that when we look into the eyes of that manufactured demon we only see ourselves looking back.
My ancestors and family were at Valley Forge with George Washington, they fought in the battles of the American Revolution, they manufactured gunpowder for the cause, voted on and signed the Constitution, they fought in the war of 1812, and over a hundred fought for the north in the Civil War. They fought the War to end all Wars and then went back and saved the World again 25 years later from the tyranny of Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan.
I have not served but I am humbled by my families and others service and sacrifice. My families blood has been spilled through out the centuries and across the globe from Cold Harbor to the trenches of France to the jungles of Viet Nam. How can I sit idly by and watch the fearful and the timid sign away those rights, rights and freedom that was paid for in the blood of my family with a stroke of pen?
So I will stand my ground, speak my peace, pray for the best outcome and plan for the worst, I will restock my gun cabinet and replenish my ammo box and come the next election I will remember.
